2008 Arkansas School Performance Report

The goal of the Arkansas School Performance Report (Report Card) is to disseminate statistical performance information to students, parents and interested community members so that they can work with their schools to ensure that Arkansas provides every student with access to an extraordinary education.

Report Card

Arkansas keeps seeing gains in test scores for students across the state. For the first time ever, in fact, more than 60 percent of students scored at proficient or advanced levels on each portion of the Arkansas Benchmark Exams and End of Course Exams:

  • Third grade proficient and advanced: 81 percent in math and 67 percent in literacy
  • Fourth grade proficient and advanced: 78 percent in math and 70 percent in literacy
  • Fifth grade proficient and advanced: 70 percent in math and 68 percent in literacy
  • Sixth grade proficient and advanced: 79 percent in math and 67 percent in literacy
  • Seventh grade proficient and advanced: 68 percent in math and 63 percent in literacy
  • Eighth grade proficient and advanced: 61 percent in math and 71 percent in literacy
  • Algebra I EOC (spring) proficient and advanced: 70 percent
  • Geometry EOC (spring) proficient and advanced: 66 percent
  • Grade 11 literacy proficient and advanced: 57 percent

Arkansas ranked ninth nationally in the number of new National Board Certified Teachers in 2009.
Arkansas had a 6.4 percent increase in the number of teachers who achieved National Board Certification
in 2009 over last year.

The number of Arkansas students taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses increased by 8.2 percent in
2009. Only four states had a larger percentage of AP test-taking seniors. The number of Arkansas students
with AP scores of 3, 4 or 5 (on a scale of 1 to 5) increased by 8.1 percent in 2009. There was a 45.2 percent
increase in the number of African-American students with AP test scores of 3, 4 or 5 in 2009 compared
to 2008.

Arkansas placed 10th in the nation in Quality Counts 2010, the annual report by Washington-based
Education Week that ranks the 50 states and the District of Columbia based on education policies and
student achievement. Arkansas scored best in The Teaching Profession category (a B-plus to rank in second
place) and in the Standards, Assessments and Accountability category (an A for a seventh-place tie with
South Carolina).
