Performance Report - New This Year

2010 Arkansas School Performance Report

The Annual Measurable Objective (AMO) is listed for three years (2007-2008, 2008-2009 and 2009-2010) for mathematics and literacy for grades three through eight. The AMO is also listed for Grade 11 Literacy, End-of-Course Algebra I and End-of-Course Geometry exams for three years. The AMO is the goal for percent proficient used in Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for the grade and subject. The goal for percent proficient is higher each year until it is 100 percent in 2013-14.

Under the accountability provisions in the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, all public schools, districts and the state are evaluated for AYP. To make AYP, at least 95 percent of students must take the state tests, and students should meet or exceed the Annual Measurable Objectives set by the state for each year.

The Performance (Status) School Rating is listed. This rating is on page 22. In the example below, there were 20 students who scored in the Advanced category and 30 who scored in the Proficient category. Each student who scores in the Advanced category produces four points. Each student who scores in the Below Basic category only produces one point.

To calculate the status rating, multiply the number of students (20) by the points assigned to the category (four) to get the points produced by the students in the Advanced category. Add up the points for each category. Divide the total points for the school (260) by the number of students (100) to get a rating score (2.6). Look for the rating score under the Cut Score heading in the Performance Category Table. The rating score of 2.6 is between 2.21 - 2.78 which is on the Schools meeting standards row.

The Graduation Rate is listed as combined and disaggregated for African American, Hispanic, Caucasian, Economically Disadvantaged, Students with Disabilities and Limited English Proficient.

The Graduation Rate in the Report Card this year uses a formula called the four-year adjusted cohort method. This is the number of students who graduate in four years with a regular high school diploma divided by the number of students who form the adjusted cohort for the graduating class. From the beginning of the ninth grade, students who are entering that grade for the first time form a cohort that is subsequently "adjusted" by adding any students who transfer into the cohort later during the ninth grade and the next three years and subtracting any students who transfer out, emigrate to another country, or die during that same period. The Federal Department of Education required this new formula. Previous graduation rates in the School Performance Report used a different method and can not be compared. More information about the graduation rate can be found at the the U.S. Department of Education Web site.
