With training as a core component, students and community members recognize community needs that can be addressed by service learning projects and develop responsive efforts. Facilitated workshops guide students from 5th through 12th grades and teachers and parents to identify projects in small-group configurations.
Building on a variety of past projects over four years, new and continuing efforts include working with local artists to enhance the appearance of a largely abandoned strip of storefronts in downtown Shirley and, in cooperation with the vocational agriculture program and the Van Buren County Master Gardeners, development of a greenhouse that will assist on-campus and community gardening projects. Other group projects include a community oral history project; a teacher appreciation effort at elementary and high school levels; establishment of a chapter of SADD; and coordination of a “Food for Kids” program; and the creation and presentation of elementary level teaching materials in reading, math, character principles, and life skills.
The county’s Master Gardeners have given significant volunteer support, along with area media and many other community members.

Shirley School’s service-learning students have surveyed their community and have discovered some major necessities for emergency preparedness. Their objective is to improve Shirley’s level of emergency preparedness with focus on communications, training, and public information. Communications during an emergency will be improved among buildings and facilities on campus and between campus and the county’s 911 agency. The first step will be installation of a bell system that will be used for emergency alerts at four campus sites that do not presently have bell systems for such use. In addition, hand-held radios will be procured and distributed among key elementary, high school, and administrative locations to be used in emergency situations.
Communications between campus and county 911 services will be improved by designation of a 911 contact site on campus. This will allow immediate and continuous contact between campus and the county 911 coordinator in Fairfield Bay.
At least four staff members will be trained in CPR and basic first aid and will be designated as initial responders who will provide basic care until first responders or trained medical personnel arrive.
Procedures developed through this project will be related to the community by student dissemination of information. Ten PSA announcements, thirty seconds in length will be developed and aired on radio station KFFB, the area’s local broadcaster. These spots will be developed by participating students under the guidance of KFFB production staff. The spots will be broadcast during June and July. The PSA’s will include information on emergency plans, evacuation plans and how information may be obtained.
Students writing, planning, organizational and interpersonal communications skills will be enhanced.

The Woodland Junior High School service learning class has completed a fund raiser for the homeless population in the Fayetteville School District. $520.00 was raised along with donated food and clothing.
Every Tuesday morning Service-Learning (SL) students help preschool students at Richardson Center, a preschool for physically and Mentally handicapped children, Children's House, a preschool for abused children who are court ordered to be in the facility and West Campus nursery, a nursery for babies 6 weeks-3 years of teenage mothers who are finishing high school. A group of 7 students volunteer at each facility for 10 weeks.
Every Wednesday morning, SL students tutor lower grade students at Asbell Elementary or they have the option of volunteering at Northwest Nursing Home. The groups switch at semester in order to gain experience at both places. Students will be writing a character sketch about a person that they work with, they will also do an oral history with a nursing home patient.
The students will later be working with a computer engineering class from the U of A in the spring on a joint service project (to be announced). They also plan to do an environmental project in the spring and have a speaker coming from the State Environmental Department.
Some of the students also perform projects on the weekend such as volunteering at the VA Hospital on Veterans Day, raking leaves for an elderly person, and visiting other nursing homes.
The SL projects were in the Gazette and the local paper this fall. The Service Learning class is a work in progress and since there are so many community needs, they are on a mission to continue to address them.
