JONESBORO, AR – Dr. Kim Wilbanks, Superintendent of Jonesboro School District, was presented with the 2014 Arkansas Superintendent of the Year Award. Dr. Richard Abernathy, Executive Director for the Arkansas Association of Educational Administrators (AAEA), surprised Dr. Wilbanks, presenting her with the award during a school board meeting in the Jonesboro School District on October 8.

The American Association of School Administrators (AASA) National Superintendent of the Year program, sponsored by ARAMARK Education, ING and AASA, pays tribute to the talent and vision of the men and women who lead the nation’s public schools. Candidates are judged on the following criteria:  leadership for learning, communication, professionalism, and community involvement. Each State association of school administrators selects a State Superintendent of the Year. These superintendents are then in the running for National Superintendent of the Year and will be recognized and honored at the AASA National Conference on Education in February in Los Angeles, California.

Dr. Sue Castleberry, Jonesboro School District Assistant Superintendent, stated, “A great leader or a great superintendent is that unique individual who when she looks behind her sees an entire district and community following her. There is no better leader to follow than Dr. Kim Wilbanks.”

State Representative Harold R. Copenhaver stated of Dr. Wilbanks, “Throughout the recent 89th General Assembly many legislators spoke of her extraordinary ability to explain complex issues and how they would impact their districts.  She provided me a wealth of insight and knowledge that only few can do. Dr. Wilbanks exemplifies leadership and most of all personal integrity which is the true meaning of this award.”
