How much time is involved in the mentoring process?

Districts are required to assist in scheduling meetings on a regular, weekly basis for a mentor and novice teacher to work together, face-to-face. This face-to-face contact can be accomplished through creative scheduling, use of instructional aides, roving substitute teachers, or use of an occasional common planning period, etc. All mentoring sessions are recorded in the online Arkansas Teacher Licensure Accountability System (ATLAS).  Mentors are required to log all mentoring hours, both Standard and Additional Hours, in ATLAS.

If the mentor received initial mentor training within the year, he/she may log the training time under the Additonal Hours category in ATLAS. Typically, a mentor is expected to spend an additional 25 hours per semester in activities that support the novice teacher.
