Praxis Assessment Protocol for Novice Teachers

Step 1: Complete a novice teacher user profile and application for assessment on-line in ATLAS (Arkansas Teacher Licensure Accountability System).

  1. A navigation manual for creating your profile and application to be assessed in ATLAS may be opened here.
  2. Open ATLAS here.
  3. Choose "Create a Profile" on the ATLAS login page. Complete and submit your ATLAS user profile. You will be returned to the login page.
  4. Login to ATLAS. Choose "Create an Application" from your menu. Complete and submit your application for assessment.
  5. You will receive a verification e-mail from ATLAS telling you that your application has been submitted.

The Office of Teacher Quality will receive your application and validate your qualifications to participate in the PRAXIS III™. Applications for assessment are processed in the order they are received. The process of qualifying candidates for PRAXIS III™ may take three weeks after application submission.

Once the applicant is qualified, an assessor will be assigned to the novice teacher. The assigned assessor will contact the novice teacher to schedule the assessment.

The novice teacher and his/her building principal will receive an assessment confirmation schedule from the assessor via email attachment.

Step 2: Prepare for the PRAXIS III ™ - Complete required assessment forms*

  1. Before the date of the assessment, a PRAXIS III™ Class Profile and PRAXIS III™ Instruction Profile must be completed. Login to ATLAS. Choose "PRAXIS III Forms" from the novice teacher home page menu. You may open, print and complete these profiles by hand; or you may use the forms that may be opened, filled-in as WORD documents, and printed upon completion.
  2. Once completed, the PRAXIS III™ Class Profile and the PRAXIS III™ Instruction Profile forms should be copied and two copies should be placed in a folder in the school office at least one hour prior to the arrival of the assessor.
  3. In addition, a PRAXIS III™ Pre-Observation Interview Form and PRAXIS III™ Post-Observation Interview Form will be found in ATLAS. These are the documents that will be used during the PRAXIS III™. They are available in ATLAS so candidates may practice with them before the assessment.

*Please note: Currently posted forms are required for all Arkansas Teacher Performance Assessments. PRAXIS III™ forms are required for use during performance assessment.

Step 3: Receive results and convert to the Arkansas Standard Teaching License

  1. After the PRAXIS III™ is completed, the novice teacher must login to ATLAS and choose "mentor survey" from the menu. The survey should be completed and submitted.
  2. When all PRAXIS III™ documentation has been received and approved by the Office of Teacher Quality, PRAXIS III™ results will be e-mailed from ATLAS to the novice teacher.
  3. To receive a Standard (five-year) Teaching License, the e-mail with PRAXIS III™ results must be printed and turned in with a completed Arkansas Teaching License Application to the Office of Professional Licensure at the Arkansas Department of Education. These documents may be faxed (501-682-4898), emailed as an attachment, or land-mailed. In addition, the Standard License fee may be land-mailed with the documents or paid on-line. The e-mail with results sent to the novice teacher will also contain these instructions.
  4. The Standard License will be land-mailed to the novice teacher using the submitted address from the Arkansas Teaching License Application.

Please note: Applying for the Standard Arkansas Teaching License as soon as possible will avoid the inconvenience of late application. It would be helpful to print more than one copy of the PRAXIS III™ results for future use. A Standard Teaching License ensures your professional status and meets legal requirements for Arkansas school districts.

Frequently Asked Questions - Novice Teachers

When do I take the PRAXIS III?
Traditional teachers with a three-year Initial License should take PRAXIS III™ during the second semester of the first year of teaching. Non-traditional teachers work on a one-year Provisional License and should take PRAXIS III™ during the second semester of the second year of teaching.
After I apply, how do I qualify to take PRAXIS III™?
You must have completed all required coursework and testing for your teacher preparation program. You must take and pass required Praxis II content and Praxis II pedagogy assessments. You must have an active [not expired] Arkansas Teaching License. There must be documentation of all required hours of mentoring.
I've applied, but an assessor hasn't called me to schedule a PRAXIS III™, now what?
Be sure your application to assess was submitted in ATLAS. If you have not received an email telling you the application has been submitted, call the Office of Teacher Quality. Remember, processing your application takes time. If you apply to assess in March during December, the assessor may not contact you until the middle of February to the first of March. February assessments are assigned first.
I think the assessor might be calling a wrong number.
Always keep information in your ATLAS profile current. This is the way you will be contacted for scheduling assessment (your work phone will be called first).
I have not received my scores by email, but everyone else has.
Place ade_admin@ark.org on your "safe" list. This is the ATLAS address. If you have not received your score notice by email a month after your assessment, please call the Office of Teacher Quality.
When will you send my new license?
The Office of Professional Licensure will be land mailing your Arkansas Standard Teaching License. You must follow the directions sent in the emailed PRAXIS III™ score notice. See details of this process above in Step 3. Should you need further information, please call the Office of Professional Licensure at (501) 682-4342.
