School Health Services

The Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) School Health Services program is founded on the Coordinated School Health Model (CSH), an eight component model recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and adopted by the Arkansas Department of Health and the ADE.

Eight components of CSH:

  • Health Education
  • Health Services
  • Nutrition Services
  • Physical Education
  • Healthy and Safe School Environment
  • Health Promotion for Staff
  • Family/Community Involvement
  • Counseling, Psychological and Social Services

Coordinating the many parts of school health into a systematic approach can enable schools to:

  • Eliminate gaps and reduce redundancies across the many initiatives and funding streams
  • Build partnerships and teamwork among school health and education professionals in the school
  • Build collaboration and enhance communication among public health, school health and other education and health professionals in the community
  • Focus efforts on helping students engage in positive, health-enhancing behaviors and avoid risk behaviors

The Arkansas School Health Services Team offers expertise and assistance in each of these components.
