Highly Qualified Teachers

 

The information on this page is relevant to teachers and school districts for Highly Qualified Teacher (HQT) purposes. Anyone listed as the teacher-of-record for a course that requires HQT (see Course Code list) must be highly qualified in that subject area.

A Highly Qualified Teacher is one who: has a degree, has an appropriate teaching license, and has demonstrated content knowledge in the subject area being taught.

Appropriate teaching licenses include: Arkansas Initial or Standard teaching license, Arkansas Provisional teaching license held by teachers enrolled in and progressing towards successful completion of a state approved non-traditional licensure program, Arkansas Professional Teaching Permit, or any Arkansas teaching license issued to a teacher who has completed all requirements except an Arkansas History course for Standard licensure through reciprocity.

Demonstration of content knowledge may be achieved via the following (see HQT Rules for specifics):

• Passed the current Arkansas licensure test (or other as indicated in the HQT Rules)
• Passed a content exam which was accepted as demonstration of content knowledge for a teaching license in another state and is acceptable through reciprocity for an Arkansas teaching license 
• Having an undergraduate major (or 24 college credit hours) in the area
• Having a graduate degree in the area
• Having National Board Certification in the area, or
• For veteran teachers, accumulating 100 points on ARHOUSSE
